When entering the room, I carefully scan it as if in search for possible anomalies. I know this place by heart, but for some reason, I don't seem to recognize it. Familiarity mixes with a strange, urgent sense of movement.
I start traversing the room barefoot and move slowly towards the carpet. I study its forms carefully: despite the obvious softness, the letters and the words seem alternately rough and heavy. Everything feels as if it’s vibrating under the surface. A coat hangs from the ceiling, creating a barely detectable movement in the room. Sculptural shadows circle slowly around it. I put it on with a matching hat. What is it I am witnessing in the mirror?
Suddenly feeling exhausted, I lay down and place my head on the pillow. From this angle, my gaze shifts between the moving imagery and still photos. They tell me stories of familiar sounds and people I think I know, they portray landscapes with Art Nouveau metro entries and Helsinki’s sharp winter light. The patterns of the room begin to slowly unravel.
This is the accumulation of everything, all things that have left their mark on the journey: friends and reveries, evenings spent together, anguish and exhaustion. The meaning of all these memories and subjects is encoded onto the very surfaces of these works. I read the shapes and envision the palette, hear the music and feel the fabrics. The shapes and the materials that seemed first rough and perfectioned now seem soft and simple. Light and surface fuse together.
Maria’s room is strange and beautiful: deeply intimate but always assuming the significance of an encounter. She not only documents and records what she observes, reads and hears in her surroundings, but she also actively inhabits the universe she has built. Loose thinking and curiosity result in a hybrid journey across different landscapes. These images, voices and memories are carefully studied and translated into a new language which oscillates between interior and exterior, between engaging and viewing. In this room, abstract shapes are woven into meaning and allow the potential of elsewhere to emerge.
